Over height vehicles

Over height vehicles can cause significant damage to tunnel structures and assets. They also have a huge impact on the safety of other drivers, as well as traffic conditions of bridges, tunnels and roads should something go wrong.

Know the height of your vehicle, alone and together with its load before you leave the depot. If drive a vehicle that’s over 4.3 metres high, you could have a huge impact on other drivers and the maintenance of our bridges, tunnels and roads if something goes wrong.

You should run through a general checklist before and during each trip:

  • Ensure that you know the height of your vehicle, alone and together with its load and that is within the legal limits
  • Ensure that the load is on the most suitable vehicle and secured properly. Split the load so that it is within normal dimensional limits
  • Plan your route before each trip. Take a copy of the map available above which shows the clearance heights for each motorway tunnel
  • Check the route. Consider using routes free from road closures or works, or time conditions for travel
  • Lookout for static and flashing overheight vehicle detour signs. Always use the detour route if you are directed, if you strike an advance protective barrier or if you are unsure about whether your vehicle and load can clear an overhead bridge, tunnel or other obstruction
  • Keep a copy of the Heavy Vehicle Driver’s Handbook in the vehicle
  • Ensure your load is covered and fastened securely to avoid movement or flapping during travel

Dangerous goods

Some heavy vehicles carry loads that are dangerous because they are flammable, toxic, infectious, radioactive, explosive or corrosive.

Dangerous goods are not permitted to travel in Sydney’s tunnels. Drivers must use detour surface routes as displayed on advance warning signage.
